After moving to the United States for a successful career at the United Nations Office of Public Information, Leona knew it was time to give something back to the country that gave her family refuge when few others would. With no money, no office, and no staff she invited a group of influential young Brazilians to her apartment and asked them to help her create a foundation that would enable expats living abroad to make a real difference back home.

Over the next few weeks, working groups were established and tasks divided. Everyone wanted to help, including Susane Forman, her long-time high-school friend, who was quick to play an essential role in giving the Foundation life. The same goes for Roberta Mazzariol, and Marcelo Hallake all of whom became founding board members lending their incredible resources and talents right from the onset.
