About the Artist

Neil Grayson (b. 1968) is a New York City-based artist working primarily in oil on canvas, often incorporating metals as pigments. As a teenager, Grayson was an obsessive prodigy, studying and then perfecting the techniques of the masters. Particularly drawn to Rembrandt’s self-portraits, he became fixated on “Chiaroscuro”, how light is captured in oil paint. He is represented by Eykyn Maclean Gallery in NYC.

Throughout Grayson’s career, he has consistently painted various flags which he describes each as “a portrait of a culture”. Bandeira do Brasil is Grayson’s most recent portrait of a unique culture, depicting Brazil through more than a dozen iconic images and many historical details, carefully camouflaged in the golden cradle encompassing an earth-like sphere, which all exist within the canopy of the Brazilian Amazon.
