APRENDENDO BRINCANDO COM NOSSOS FILHOS
(LEARNING BY PLAYING WITH OUR CHILDREN) |

Organization: Praticável (Implementable)
Rio de Janeiro - Rio de Janeiro
Located between the traditional neighborhood of Santa Teresa and the Corcovado (Hunchback) mountain, two famous tourist spots in Rio, the Morro dos Prazeres (Hill of Pleasures) is among the communities with the highest levels of violence in Rio de Janeiro. The Praticável joins children and teenagers with their mothers in a space where integration is seen as a path to reducing the risk they live with everyday. While the mothers work with sewing, children participate in art-education projects. With BrazilFoundation's resources, the space will be set up to allow women from the community to specialize in cutting fabric, sewing, embroidering and making educational toys with cloth that have real chance of reaching the market and improving family income.

CIDADANIA EM COMUNIDADE QUILOMBOLA (CITIZENSHIP IN A SLAVE MAROON SOCIETY) |

Instituto Amora Carambola received an Incentive Award from BrazilFoundation in 2004 to develop a professional training project for the young residents of Sapatu, a former slave maroon society. The goal was to teach the group skills to produce products from bananas using a manufacturing facility already existent in the region. With BrazilFoundation's resources and through a partnership with UNICAMP (the University of Campinas), Instituto Amora Carambola successfully trained 30 youths to manage production and operate the machinery. In 2005, further support from BrazilFoundation will allow for the purchase of raw materials and fund the factory's maintenance expenses during its start-up phase of production. In one year, the mini-factory of banana derivatives will function as a cooperative, creating income for the local families and establishing a regional model of sustainable development.

DAMAS DA CAMÉLIA (LADIES OF CAMELIA) |

Rio de Janeiro - Rio de Janeiro
AMOCAVIM develops projects for women who are currently postitutes. In the area of health, the organization has produced significant results in the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Now, AMOCAVIM is diversifying and expanding its area of action through important partnerships with the Department of Culture and UNESCO. With BrazilFoundation's support, the association will train 90 women to be tailors and costume designers to work in the carnival industry. In addition to technical training, the women will learn about the celebration's history and about samba. The proposal is to form a workship/school that can meet the demand of Rio's carnival industry and the city's other festivals.

DESIGN SOLIDÁRIO (SOLIDARITY WITH DESIGN) |

CTA has implemented extensive projects for the people of the forest since 1983. The group's projects promote citizenship, health, education and human rights in a number of rubber tapping communities. After identifying the economic potential of local crafts, CTA proposed to develop a line of crafts that are characteristic of the Amazon region, using seeds, tree bark, leaves, vines and other non-lumber elements. With BrazilFoundation's resources, the community of rubber tappers of São Luiz do Remanso will receive technical support from professionals to give traditional products a modern design that have a real potential for sales. This will help restore and value the regional culture, and complement family income.

DOCE CIDADANIA (SWEET CITIZENSHIP) |

(APRUSI Association of Small Farmers of Santo Inácio)

Last year, APRUSI received an Incentive Award from BrazilFoundation to build a greenhouse for exotic plants and septic tanks for the residents of Santo Inácio. The organization demonstrated an impressive ability to manage its resources and mobilize the community. Today, the greenhouse has attained financial sustainability and the septic tanks have been installed. To give continuity to this work, APRUSI formed a unit to produce raw sugar, taking advantage of the region's abundant sugarcane. The goal is to consolidate the cooperative spirit of community residents and produce income. With new support from BrazilFoundation, the farmers will be trained in qualified planting and the administration of production. The resources will also be used to equip a unit for production, providing work for employees and generating local sustainable development.

MULHERES DE CORPO E ALGAS (WOMEN, BODY AND SEAWEED) |

For years, the community of fisherman in Icapuí, Ceará, extracted seaweed without concern for issues such as sustainability or environmental equilibrium. Even with fishing being the main economic activity, seaweed always had an essential role in the community, both economically, as a complement to family income, and socially by providing jobs for women and you people who do not fish. Looking ahead, Fundação Brasil Cidadão (FBC) has developed the project Mulheres de Corpo e Algas. With the resources BrazilFoundation will provide, 20 women will be trained to process seaweed to create products with high commercial value, such as cosmetics, soap, shampoo and culinary items. The environmentally appropriate harvest of seaweed will prevent a reduction in the fish population in the region's waters, thus avoiding a detrimental impact on the community's main source of income.

(Cultural Association of São Gonçalo "Forever Alive")

With the support of Associação Cultural e Comunitária de São Gonçalo, a group of women collect medicinal plants that are native to this municipality, which is located in the Vale do Jequitinhonha. The replanting and preservation of plant species in the Cerrado region is done with the leadership of two professional women who moved from Belo Horizonte to the community. BrazilFoundation's support will qualify 30 women to use plants to produce cosmetics. In addition to marketing the products to produce income, the women themselves will be able to use the beauty products.

Cariri, in the savana of Ceará, is scarred by social underdevelopment. Small farmers who must live with the challenges of a semi-arid environment form the population of Campo Alegre, Crato. Nonetheless, the region has an abundance of seeds, such as pequi, babaçu, girassol and nim, which have oils that are valuable in the marketplace. Leveraging this opportunity, the Foundation for Training, Research and Dissemination of Technologies for Sustainable Development in the Semi-Arid Region proposed creating an entity for the sustainable extraction of vegetable oils in Campo Alegre. With BrazilFoundation's support, the processing plant will be equipped and farmers will be trained to use it and administer it cooperatively. The result will generate income and sustainably develop the region.

IBENS has been implementing projects for local sustainable development in small communities around the country since 2001. With this experience, the organization identified a community of dockworkers on Rio de Janeiro's coast who have been pressured by intense real estate speculation and left without an income and basic means of subsistence. After studying the community's natural resources, IBENS selected oyster harvesting as a key potential economic activity for the region. BrazilFoundation's support will help train 20 families in organizational techniques, cooperative management, and the sustainable production of oysters, thus mobilizing the community and creating income.

QUILOMBO DE IVAPORUNDUVA (SLAVE MAROON SOCIETY OF IVAPORUNDUVA) |

Since 1994, the Associação Quilombo de Ivaporunduva, originally founded by runaway slaves, has promoted initiatives that value the community's cultural identity, preserve the environment, and sustainably develop the region in the Vale do Ribeira. Ivaporunduva is a community of the descendents of a maroon society in the south of São Paulo, where bananas are a vital part of the survival. Crafts made with fibers from banana trees are of great importance to families, which create beautiful work with intense dedication. Recognizing the quality of these products and their true marketability, the organization developed a project to monitor the productive chain of crafts and organize families from the community in a cooperative administration. With BrazilFoundation's resources, 70 families who descend from slave maroon societies will be trained to manage and produce the crafts from banana trees. They will also market the products, generate income and organize residents to sustainably develop the community.

REDUÇÃO DE AGROTÓXICOS NA AGRICULTURA FAMILIAR (REDUCTION OF AGROTOXINS IN FAMILY AGRICULTURE) |

The use of agricultural chemicals is one of Brazil's main environmental problems. The detrimental impact of chemicals is being recognized as an essential issue not only for the government's environmental policy but for public health as well. However, avoiding the use of chemicals can bring economic benefits, since the products can be certified as organic, and consequently find greater acceptance by the population. The Núcleo Comunitário dos Amigos de Natércia plans to change regional agricultural by reducing the level agricultural toxins used in plantations and introducing environmentally sound strategies. BrazilFoundation's support will enable 84 people to form an association of organic coffee producers. The result will be an increase in family income and the formation of a culture for sustainable and agroecological production in the region.

Instituto Ágora promotes and defends human rights, democracy and participative citizenship. The organization implemented an electoral center in the city of São Paulo that made the City Council's operations more transparent and accessible, increasing public participation and social consciousness. The center has worked as a channel for communication between citizens and their representatives in the local legislature. With BrazilFoundation's support, Ágora will replicate the methodology it used successfully in São Paulo in Rio de Janeiro, with the goal of achieving a pro-active model of participation within a short timeframe.

Jaboatão dos Guararapes - Pernambuco
Movimento Pró-Criança has developed over the past 10 years projects aimed at children and teenagers in the metropolitan area of Recife, which has alarming rates of violence and poverty. The movement uses art as a resource to reach dozens of youths. Starting by recognizing their talent and initiative, Projeto Arte Fazendo Parte, with BrazilFoundation's support, with develop the skills of 30 youths in painting, drawing, and ceramics. In addition to practical classes, the group will receive advice about entrepreneurship, production skills, and marketing.

BrazilFoundation supported the project Pré-Vestibular Cooperativo in 2003, which instigated a great change in the educational context of Pentecoste, Ceará. It made possible the entrance of dozens of young people into the Universidade Federal do Ceará, in a diverse number of majors. Since it has consolidated itself as an initiative with excellent results, o instituto submitted a new project proposal this year. The goal is to expand the education centers to reach a greater number of students in the region. With BrazilFoundation's support, young people will be trained and mobilized to create nucleuses of college preparation courses in their communities.

A INTELIGÊNCIA DAS MÃOS (THE INTELLIGENCE OF HANDS) |

The Associação François Xavier Bagnoud do Brasil promotes the rights of children and teenagers, particularly those who have suffered sexual abuse, and supports people who are HIV positive and have AIDS. The support of those who are HIV positive includes psychosocial services, help with nutrition and job training. With BrazilFoundation's support, the project, Inteligência das Mãos will train 40 men, who are fathers of HIV positive families, to make textiles. The idea is to generate income in a short time that can reduce the social and economic impact of AIDS.

Salvador - Bahia
Pangea - Center for Socio-Environmental Studies - searches for sustainable solutions to social problems in communities all over Brazil. When it identified a team of young entrepreneurs in the outskirts of Salvador who did not have access to job opportunities (Salvador is the Brazilian city with the highest unemployment rate among the young), Pangea found a solution: the use of bamboo to produce domestic utensils and decorative objects. With BrazilFoundation's support, Jovens e Bambu will train 30 youths to cooperatively design products using bamboo as a raw material and in marketing strategies. The goal is for the youths to form a sustainable cooperative and to help them gain skills to enter the job market in the future.

PREVESP: PRÉ-VESTIBULAR POPULAR (COLLEGE PREP FOR THE PEOPLE) |

More than eight years ago, three students from the state university of Maranhão united to found a small college preparation course for young people in Caxias. After many challenges and a lot of work, today the prep course has three bases spread around the city, more than 200 students currently enrolled, and has helped more than 400 people to get into university. All the course's professors are volunteers, students or former students of the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão and there are strong ties between the university and the community. With BrazilFoundation's support, Fundação Maurízio Vanini will prepare 50 young people for the college entrance exam in 2006 and will reorganize the space where it develops its activities.

TAMBORES DO VIDANÇA (VIDANÇA'S DRUMS) |

For more than 10 years, Vidança has been promoting the access of young people in the outskirts of Fortaleza to dance and strengthening their rights as citizens. With its participatory methodology, which involves mothers and the local community, Vidança received support from BrazilFoundation in 2003 and produced excellent results. This new project focuses on confronting two challenges: to make the work attractive to a male public (99% of Vidança's participants are girls) and to find strategies for sustaining the institution. With BrazilFoundation's support Vidança plans to train 20 youths in making percussion instruments. The goal is to create a workshop that is capable of producing income for the young people involved and for the organization while strengthening Vidança's percussion group, Tambores do Vidança.

The world's elderly population has grown significantly and the inadequacy of public and private spaces has placed this group's basic right of mobility at risk. Falls consitute one of the most common reasons the elderly seek emergency services at public hospitals and also come at high personal cost owing to the resultant physcial consquences and medical expenses. With BrazilFoundation's help, the project Envelhecimento Sem Tropeços will offer a program of activities for 280 old people. The goals are to increase independence, prevent falls, and create a strategy to influence government policy to address the accessibility of public spaces to this age group.

QUALIDADE DE VIDA DE CRIANÇAS E ADOLESCENTES OBESOS (QUALITY OF LIFE FOR OBESE CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS) |

The increase of juvenile diabetes is one of the most serious public health problems. Obese children and teenagers from low-income families do not have opportunities of treatment in public services. This project presents a group of actions that permit the treatment of 200 low-income obese children and teenagers who depend on public health services provided by SUS da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo. With BrazilFoundation's support, Santa Casa de Misericórdia will offer monitored physical activities, nutritional re-education, familial consciousness, clinical, psychological and nutritional laboratory testing, contributing to the reduction of high obesity rates and heath risks.

Itamaraju - Bahia
Sistemas Independentes de Promoção da Saúde plans to use the development of family and medicinal agriculture to reduce the incidence of the most common infectious diseases in some impoverished communities in southern Bahia. The region addressed comprises the municipalities of Lembrança, Fincão, Gado Bravo and Santo Agostinho, with a total population of 69 families, including about 400 people, 43% of whom are children and adolescents. Terra Viva will apply BrazilFoundation's support to the train residents and provide strategic technical assistance for the cultivation of vegetables, fruit and medicinal plants. The goal is to improve quality of life in these communities through access to knowledge about nutritional alternatives and natural medicine, as well as to promote the exchange of this information.

VOZ E VIOLINOS (VOICE AND VIOLINS) |

Instituto Reciclarte promotes access to music and education for children and teenagers. The institute created and has maintained the String Orquestra of Grota do Surucucu for the past 10 years as a base for the project, Music in the Communities, which received and Incentive award from BrazilFoundation in 2004, and offers training in musical theory to 96 young people from the slum Grota do Surucucu. With the resources from the Incentive Award, Reciclarte expanded the number of children it serves, trained teaching assistants and renovated the practice rooms, offering adequate conditions for the young musicians and attracting interested spectators. With BrazilFoundation's support in 2005, Instituto Reciclarte will be able to increase the number of students it serves and consolidate the organizations structure with the goal of increasing the visibility of the work and making it a form of professional training for the talented young people involved in the project.

Centro de Defesa dos Direitos da Criança e do Adolescente de Ijuí (Center for the Defense of the Rights of Children and Adolescents of Ijuí)
Ijuí - Rio Grande do Sul
The Centro de Defesa dos Direitos das Crianças e Adolescentes de Ijuí accompanies the psychosocial development of teenagers who have broken the law and are sent to the judicial system through means such as Assisted Freedom and Community Service. The project Cri-Action Gepeto aims to transform the many pinocchios into true citizens, using the cultural and historic recovery of toys made of wood and the principles of cooperative production. With BrazilFoundation's support, 20 young people who are facing disciplinary measures will be trained to make wooden toys.

The growth of the street population is one of the most serious problems in Rio de Janeiro. It becomes even more alarming when we realize that the majority of street dwellers are children who detach themselves from their families for psychosocial reasons. Since 1997, the Associação Brasileira Terra dos Homens has been reintegrating families. Terra dos Homens uses a network of organizations that work with the street population to reintegrate children with their families. Data provided by the organization confirms the success of intervention - 80% of the children and teenagers who return to their families do not go back to the streets. BrazilFoundation's resources will enable 30 young people and their families to receive services from Associação Brasileira Terra dos Homens. Their homes will be identified and they will be carefully reinserted into the family environment. To execute this project, the organization has partnerships with schools in Rio de Janeiro so that children will return to school as well.

EDUCAÇÃO E CULTURA PARA CRIANÇAS E ADOLESCENTES

Organization: Associação de Trabalhadores em Ofícios Vários, Carroceiros e Catadores de Material Reciclável (ATRACAR - Association of Workers, Wagoneers, and Gatherers of Recycled Materials)
Gravataí - Rio Grande do Sul
ATRACAR trains and organizes garbage pickers and other occupations related to recycling. The children and teenagers of garbage pickers spend part of the day with their parents in the garbage dump, often collecting garbage. The project Educação e Cultura para Crianças e Adolescentes plans to promote extra-curricular activities for the children of garbage collectors in one of the poorest areas of Gravataí, in metropolitan Porto Alegre. BrazilFoundation's support will benefit 100 children and teenagers, distancing them from child labor and risks to their health.

ATENDIMENTO A CRIANÇAS E ADOLESCENTES EM SITUAÇÃO DE RISCO (SERVICE FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS IN HIGH RISK SITUATIONS) |

"Crackland" is a point of intense movement and drug distribution in the city of São Paulo. There, dozens of street children live with the abuse of illegal drugs, violence, and the absence of a protective network capable of offering alternatives and psychological support. About 90% of the children who live in the streets of "Crackland" use heavy drugs. In seven years of activity, Associação de Apoio ao Projeto Quixote has reached more than 2,300 children and teenagers and has training 1,700 educators. The organization has developed a respectable network of services to reach this population, accompanying the trajectories and introducing roads out of the universe of drugs and violence. With BrazilFoundation's support, Associação de Apoio ao Projeto Quixote will develop a shelter for 50 children and teenagers who use drugs and will train them to be graffiti artists. In recognition of complexity of working with this population, the organization will use the training in graffiti techniques to keep the youths involved in the project.

The city of Teresópolis has about 12,000 residents who are between 10 and 14 years old. Ten thousand of these young people have less than one year of education or none at all. The city borders the municipality of Sumidouro, which has the highest rate of school attendance in the southeast. OCA develops techniques of artistic expression (music, literature, theatre and dance) to reach young people who suffer the psychological consequences of being children of alcoholics. With BrazilFoundation's support, the project Saci-Tererê will reach 30 children and teenagers who in high-risk situations and whose parents are enrolled in the program for children with alcoholic parents of the juvenile justice system of Teresópolis.

São Paulo is one of the largest cities on the planet. Its process of urbanization has been intense and unplanned, without consideration for the environment. The outskirts of the city are extremely arid, without green areas and communal spaces with a visible degradation of public patrimony. Through the project, Um Jardim para o Jardim Míriam, Jardim Míriam Arte Clube plans to form a center with residents to cultivate plants for public gardens, esthetically and environmentally transforming the neighborhood. The goal is to develop each individual's environmental consciousness and sense of protecting public spaces. With BrazilFoundation's help, neighborhood residents will participate in workshops, lectures and activities covering environmental conservation themes and public patrimony in addition to planting 200 plants in public places.

Since 1988 the Zoin Circus School has taught circus arts to children and teenagers in the outskirts of Teresina, Piauí. The city is going through an intense process of urbanization that has not included activities that bring cultural diversity to young people, especially those of the metropolitan periphery. The Zoin Circus School introduces a space where this public can have contact with art and other cultural options. In 17 years of existence, the group has become well known and has performed throughout the state. With BrazilFoundation's support, a circus school will be founded in Teresina's poorest community, Vila Irmã Dulce, where students of the neighborhood school will have the chance to develop their artistic and cultural potential.

The small city of Cordisburgo, Minas Gerais, is the birthplace of one of Brazil's greatest writers, João Guimarães Rosa. His work is considered essential to the understanding of Brazil's social history, but the richness of his vocabulary makes the reading difficult. The Associação de Amigos da Casa Guimarães Rosa teaches a group of local youths to tell the stories from the author's text with the goal of promoting his work and stimulating tourism for the town. The goal of BrazilFoundation's support will be to stimulate reading habits, develop the young people and generally increase the community's self-esteem.

The project Pelos Caminhos do Jongo recovers the cultural memory of the population Bracuí, originally founded as a slave maroon society (quilombo) and located in Angra dos Reis and Parati, two municipalities that receive a large number of tourists with different results. The first town became a slum and lost its cultural identity. Parati maintains and develops its festivals, in this way becoming more attractive and turning tourism into its main source of income. The project's goal is to stimulate education and value the cultural inheritance of the group, in a context where the dissipation of community values and the necessity of finding outside work are destructive to the quality of life of the quilombo's inhabitants. The group integrates generations and creates an exchange with other black communities. BrazilFoundation's support will expand the organization's work.
