We would like to thank all of you who attended BrazilFoundation's Fifth Anniversary Celebration last Wednesday. We raised US$11,800, bolstering the resources raised at our Gala Benefit last September to finance projects to be selected in 2006. Wednesday’s funds will actually support a full extra project! The 300 people who joined us in the celebration of this important milestone confirm what Swiss educator Johann Pestallozzi said a few centuries ago: "There are plenty of good ideas going around, but for a good idea to become reality it needs hearts and hands."
That is exactly what happened with the idea of a BrazilFoundation. Since 17 people gathered at its first meeting five years ago, BrazilFoundation has gained the support of numerous friends in the US and in Brazil. We count on a wonderfully experienced group of people on our advisory board. The foundation has added five new directors to its board of directors, who will further build the structure of this unique and important transnational bridge.
We achieved this success thanks to the commitment of our donors, volunteers, board members and directors, grantees and our staff in New York and Rio de Janeiro. Those responsible for the entire grant-making process in Brazil have bravely poured over 3,000 project proposals in the last five years. We are proud to be partnering with 135 grantees, touching the lives of over 20,000 people from all over the vast and exciting country that is Brazil. In the process, we have directed US$3 million to projects in the areas of education, health, culture, citizenship and human rights.
BrazilFoundation has developed relationships of trust with our grantees, NGO leaders, colleagues in the field of philanthropy, and corporations that now seek us out for guidance on their own corporate responsibility programs in Brazil. Given our achievements, BrazilFoundation is poised to grow exponentially, responding to existing needs and opportunities in Brazil. The next five years will be crucial in our organizational development. We count on your support!
