BrazilFoundation's 5th Anniversary Party

We would like to thank all of you who attended BrazilFoundation's Fifth Anniversary Celebration last Wednesday. We raised US$11,800, bolstering the resources raised at our Gala Benefit last September to finance projects to be selected in 2006. Wednesday’s funds will actually support a full extra project! The 300 people who joined us in the celebration of this important milestone confirm what Swiss educator Johann Pestallozzi said a few centuries ago: "There are plenty of good ideas going around, but for a good idea to become reality it needs hearts and hands."

Breakfast Talk with Jorge Gerdau Johannpeter, President and CEO of the Gerdau Group.

In a speech entitled "Sustainable Development, Ethics, and the Formation of Values in Society", Jorge Gerdau Johannpeter, President and CEO of the Brazilian steel company, the Gerdau Group, the largest long steel producer in the Americas. Gerdau addressed an audience of about 55 yesterday morning in the JPMorgan Chase Auditorium. The Breakfast Talk, sponsored by BrazilFoundation and JP Morgan, followed an event at the Waldorf-Astoria the previous night in which the Brazilian American Chamber of Commerce named Mr. Gerdau the Brazilian 2005 Person of the Year. Gerdau's speech centered on the critical importance of social responsibility in an increasingly global business world. In defining sustainable development, an essential element in his 104-year-old company's longevity, Gerdau said sustainable development "seeks to reconcile social, economic, and environmental needs without compromising the future of any one of these." Gerdau believes corporations must strive to improve individual means, in turn improving the whole and people's sense of citizenship and being a true citizen in a society. In his view, improving the quality of life of the global population is "in our hands to construct."
