FINANCING DREAMS
BrazilFoundation adds 33 projects to the total financed

In a festive event, BrazilFoundation announced the 33 social projects selected for funding from 840 proposals received this year. Following tradition, the award ceremony took place in the auditorium of the Federation of Industry of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan) on July 18. This ceremony was special because it marked the fifth anniversary of the annual project selection process. The winning projects came from all over Brazil -- from Ilha de Marajó in Pará all the way to Pontal in Rio Grande do Sul.

Participants included the coordinators of the winning projects and some guests who came from the US especially for the ceremony. Among those present were Catherine J. Jarvis, Consul of the Press, Education, and Culture Section of the US Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, Miriam Bandão, representative of the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) in Rio de Janeiro, and the acclaimed actress, Sonia Braga.

The opening speaker was Leona Forman, president of the BrazilFoundation, who, together with Susane Worcman, vice president, expressed her satisfaction in announcing the new project winners.

She was followed by André Rocha of the project Cultural and Citizenship Workshops (Bombinhas, Santa Catarina) who was elected representative of the coordinators. Mr. Rocha gave a short speech and then sang a song that highlighted the need for perseverance in the construction of a better world. Joining him in the song was Luciana da Silva of the project Pelos Caminhos do Jongo, from Angra dos Reis (Rio de Janeiro). The refrain "the world isn't being, it is becoming" was joined in by the audience who gave a standing ovation at the end.

Also present at the ceremony were 22 young people from the Vidança Dance Company from Ceará, on the outskirts of Fortaleza. This project was supported by the BrazilFoundation in 2003 and 2005. At the end of the ceremony, the actress Sonia Braga spoke emotionally about the importance of investments in social projects in Brazil.

Each project selected will receive up to R$ 25,000 (US $10,000) and all will be monitored by the Foundation for one year.

Since 2001, 170 projects, including those selected by individual donors, have been financed by the BrazilFoundation for a total of US $4 million. The Foundation supports projects in Education, Health, Citizenship, Human Rights, and Culture.
