BrazilFoundation celebrates its five-year anniversary dancing to samba

"Happy birthday" was accompanied by a percussion band
BrazilFoundation's volunteers, friends, and collaborators met on November 16, 2005, in New York to celebrate the foundation's fifth anniversary in high style.

More than 300 people showed up to celebrate at Cain night club, an upscale meeting point for the famous and young professionals located in the heart of Chelsea in Manhattan. The night was alive with nonstop music, cake, candles, and a surprise: a show presented by the percussion section of a samba school, including professional samba dancers, thanks to the generosity of David Curley, friend and BrazilFoundation donor.

BrazilFoundation's events committee seized the opportunity to energize its funding campaign. Thanks to the efforts of Ângela Magarian, who organized a raffle, and Aline Cohen who sold the tickets, and a number of other volunteers, BrazilFoundation raised $12,000 that night. The raffle prizes were donated by H. Stern, Constanca Basto, Pilar Rossi, Roberto Vascon, Hélio de Souza Hair Studio, and Bistro La Pallette. These funds will be used to finance projects selected during 2006.

The Children's Institute launches a fund-raising campaign with help from BrazilFoundation

Paulo Baía, Raul Guimarães and Alan Brick.
The Children's Institute, a Rio-based NGO dedicated to support and rehabilitate children at social risk and their families, launched in New York last October their campaign "Children's Call to Action", a program aimed at garnering international help for the NGO's projects in Brazil.

This campaign was carried out in partnership with BrazilFoundation, which will play the role of a "bridge" by offering tax deductions to US donors who contribute to the Institute.

The launch party, held in the head offices of Langham & Co, attracted more than 60 guests. Members of the New York committee of the Children's Institute included Kiki Brulay, Paulo Baía, Jeane Muniz and Raul Guimarães. BrazilFoundation's president, Leona Forman, spoke during the event about the importance of the ties between the two institutions.

This campaign of the Children's Institute is part of BrazilFoundation's Directed Donations program, which offers to act as "fiscal agent" for other beneficiary institutions suggested by donors. This process begins with a close analysis of the NGO done by BrazilFoundation's office in Rio de Janeiro, examining the organization's suitability, management transparency, and legal documentation. BrazilFoundation then agrees to accept the donated funds and provides a receipt for income tax purposes in the US. The foundation charges a 5% management fee for this service. This partnership facilitates donations to the Children's Institute by avoiding the usual difficulties in making a money transfer to a NGO overseas.

Institutions supported by BrazilFoundation Receive CEBDS Award

The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) awarded on November 30 its second prize to two organizations funded by BrazilFoundation in 2005: The Brazilian Institute for Education in Sustainable Businesses (Ibens) and the Citizen Brazil Foundation for Education, Culture, and Technology (Ceara), which was honored with the Special Prize for its project "Women, Body and Seaweed."

These two entities were honored in the NGO category. Ibens has been working since 2001 implanting local and sustainable development projects in small communities throughout the country. And the "Women, Body and Seaweed" project, currently in development with BrazilFoundation's support, teaches the women in the fishing community of Icapui, Ceará, to fashion products out of marine algae gathered in an ecologically sustainable way. The objective is to generate income by producing cosmetics, personal hygiene products, and culinary ingredients that use marine algae as a raw material.

The Second CEBDS Award of Sustainable Development has the sponsorship of six large companies connected to CEBDS (Alcoa, Braskem, CVRD-Vale do Rio Doce, Gerdau, Petrobras, and White Martins) and of Sebrae. It was created to promote the inclusion of environmental management and social responsibility in the economic sphere. One hundred and fifty sustainable development projects covering five categories registered.

BrazilFoundation and TV Globo stars receive awards

Leona Forman, Maurício de Souza and the director of the Brazil-US Chamber of Commerce, Sueli Bonaparte.
BrazilFoundation was one of those chosen this year to receive the Brazilian Award, a prize created four years ago by Ricky Terezi, journalist, producer, and editor of the website Brazilianonline, to honor professionals and companies which have contributed to the growth and success of the Brazilian community in the United States.

The award ceremony, held on November 22, 2005 in the Bildner Center in New York, attracted business people, journalists, and stars from TV Globo. Serginho Groisman, host of the Globo program Altas Horas, was the master of ceremony for the event. The prize was handed to BrazilFoundation's president Leona Forman, its CFO Roberta Mazzariol and the director of events Patricia Lobaccaro by Ambassador Júlio César Gomes dos Santos.

In addition to BrazilFoundation, awards were also given to the writer Glória Perez, the cast of the Globo soap opera "America," the cartoonist Maurício de Souza, and the director of the Brazilian American Chamber of Commerce, Sueli Bonaparte. Among the celebrities who attended the event were Paula Lavigne, movie producer; Amauri Soares, president of Globo Internacional; Patrícia Poeta, journalist, and the actors Debora Secco, Aílton Graça, and Paula Bulamarqui.

The Brazilian Award identifies Brazilian leaders in the United States by means of popular vote of the Brazilian community. The opinions of journalists and businessmen resident in the US are also part of the selection process. This event received broad press coverage and could be seen in Brazil on the TV programs Altas Horas and Video Show.
