WINDOW SHOPPING
Take a look at the products produced and sold by the social projects in Brazil.

The concept of community-based micro-businesses has established itself throughout the world as one of the most efficient methods of sustainable economic growth. In Brazil, a large number of projects have produced successful business plans that incorporate high-quality products and services while respecting local traditions, making socially oriented investments, and creating jobs. In this "store window," we will show you some of the merchandise from the organizations BrazilFoundation supports. The sale of these products is contributing to the sustainable development of many communities all around Brazil.

Project: Artesanato Ribeirinho de Santarém
(Crafts from the Riverbank Women of Santarém)
Organization: Associação das Artesãs Ribeirinhas de Santarém
(Association of Women Artisans from the Riverbank of Santarém) - Pará
Product: Traditional Crafts

Throughout the Amazon region wooden gourds are commonly used to drink water, take showers, drink açaí (an energy-packed tropical fruit) and tacacá. With support from BrazilFoundation for a project Artesanato Ribeirinho de Santarém, local women carve the fruit of the cuieira tree into gourds, apply dye made from natural pigments, and paint them with native designs to make a product that has become a trademark of the local culture.

The Associação das Artesãs Ribeirinhas de Santarém has been producing these wooden gourds, decorated with patterns and designs typical of the Amazon region for a number of years. The manufacture and sale of the gourds creates jobs and family income. With BrazilFoundation's support 50 artisans are being trained to run a business embracing package development, quality control, and the establishment of large-scale commercial channels for shipments to Rio/São Paulo and for export.

Project: Lua Nova (New Moon)
Organization: Associação Lua Nova
(Association New Moon) - Araçoiaba da Serra, São Paulo
Product: Cloth Dolls

In Araçoiaba da Serra in the state of São Paulo, the Lua Nova association operates a shelter for at-risk adolescent mothers who are often recovering addicts, street people, and victims of domestic violence. The facility offers temporary shelter, psychiatric treatment, vocational courses, and programs to find work and generate income. BrazilFoundation provided funding to support 40 youths requiring a range of services and for the training of professionals and social workers who are organizing three shelter units in the cities of Votoranti, Sorocaba, and Araçoiaba, all in the state of São Paulo.

One of Lua Nova's greatest successes is its production of dolls made of cloth. The dolls are made using old-fashioned methods such as hand embroidery and stitching. The association sells them in shopping centers in São Paulo and has even exported some to Italy. The association's website (www.luanova.org.br) shows off the entire line of dolls and other products made by the talented girls and women of Lua Nova.

Organization: Finatec - Fundação de Empreendimentos Científicos e Tecnológicos
(Foundation for Scientific and Technological Initiatives) Brasilia - Federal District
Product: Stationary Papers, Folders and Envelopes of Recycled Paper

Reciclando Papéis e Vidas aims to reintegrate adults just released from prison into the workforce. With the support of the BrazilFoundation 25 ex-prisoners are being trained to make paper handicrafts, bookbindings, and sanitize books and files. Through a partnership with the University of Brasilia, they are allowed to use the work areas for classes and workshops and to receive help from specialists. Besides offering training in the cleaning and organization of files, this program sells the traditional stationery, folders, and envelopes that are made from natural, recycled raw materials. The currency printing house donated discontinued bills to the project and now you can buy envelopes and stationery made of reprocessed money.
