Analysts Cover Brazil Visiting Project Candidates for 2005 Award.

BrazilFoundation's project analysts have been traveling throughout Brazil visiting the 52 finalists that were chosen from more than 1,000 applicants (click here to see the list of finalists). Susane Worcman, vice president of the foundation's office in Rio, and analysts, Sheila Nogueira, Gláucio Gomes and Ciano Norões have traveled as far and wide as Rio Grande do Sul and Acre in their quest for the strongest candidates. TAM airlines provided the tickets that have made the trips possible. BrazilFoundation will announce 25 to 30 projects selected for 2005 on June 14. The foundation, its supporters and the project leaders will come together to celebrate with an award ceremony on July 13 at Federação das Indústrias do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FIRJAN). The days before the ceremony are an important opportunity for project leaders to meet each other and unite in workshops to exchange ideas. The celebration will include a performance by the young musicians from Orquestra da Grota of Instituto Reciclarte, a project BrazilFoundation supported in 2004 (see story in this issue).

BrazilFoundation Gains an Award and New Friends in Miami

Leona Forman, BrazilFoundation's president, and Lorelei Williams, its development consultant, traveled to Miami on May 10 to accept the Brazilian International Press Award, which was organized by journalist Carlos Borges. The foundation was recognized in the category for Important US Institutions with Initiatives that Benefit Brazil and the Brazilian Community. The trip also provided the chance for the foundation to expand its contacts in Miami, a city many Brazilians call home.

On May 11, BrazilFoundation hosted a reception in the Miami studio of artist Romero Britto, who has been a generous supporter since 2003 and is a co-chair of the annual gala this year. Britto has donated one of his works for the auction at the gala next September. A painting he donated in 2003, 2 of Us, raised $6,100 for the foundation and his serigraph, Jennifer, brought in US$2,300 in 2004. More than 50 people came to Britto Central to learn about BrazilFoundation's activities and a number of them expressed interest in both volunteering for the foundation in Florida and organizing a "Miami table" at the upcoming gala in New York.

BrazilFoundation's new committee of volunteers in Miami: Marta Ramos in the middle with
Célia McCallum, from Lehman Brothers and Solange Lemos, from Safra Bank.

Marta Ramos, an early supporter in Miami, hosted a lunch for 15 people on May 12. By the time desert was served, guests had established a Miami-based events committee to organize a benefit cocktail reception and an auction in April 2006. Members of this committee include Marta Ramos, who lives both in Miami and Belo Horizonte, Solange Lemos of Banco Safra, Celia McCallum of Lehman Brothers, Maria Brenteson, a Cuban friend of the foundation and realtor with Esslinger Wooten Maxwell. Also present at the lunch were journalist Christina Bianchi, a marketing agent for Gazeta Brazilian News in Fort Lauderdale, who offered to help with marketing and publicity for the April 2006 event and Gelson Cardoso, the representative of Miolo wines of Rio Grande do Sul, who offered to bring Brut, a sparkling wine his company produces, to future BrazilFoundation events.

BrazilFoundation would also like to thank Adriana Adelson of IBM who opened her home for Leona and Lorelei to stay and for future meetings of the newly established committee. The foundation deeply appreciates the honor awarded by the Brazilian International Press and the enthusiasm of all those in Florida who expressed interest in its work.

Lua Nova Wins an Award from Ashoka-McKinsey.

Three of Lua Nova's residents, Janaina Roque dos Anjos, Ana Paula Magal de Rocha and Ana Lucia Veiga, mixing clay to make bricks.
The Lua Nova Association from Araçoiaba da Serra (SP), which received BrazilFoundation's support in 2004, won first place for Ashoka-McKinsey's Social Entrepreneur Award with its project, a Business Plan for a Construction School.

In the project, Lua Nova proposed for the young mothers that it assists to learn to make "ecological bricks" to build their own homes. This technique implements the method used by Tijolos Ecológicos, a project run by Ação Moradia from Uberlândia (MG), which BrazilFoundation supported in 2003. Tijolos Ecológicos enables the production of easy-to-handle bricks without the use of ovens. BrazilFoundation introduced the coordinators of Lua Nova and Ação Moradia.

The construction of houses with ecological bricks offers a valuable opportunity for the mothers. Lua Nova helps women who are often homeless, unemployed, and addicted to drugs, to rebuild their lives and relationships with their children. Frequently, even when the women are psychologically prepared to leave the center, they have nowhere to go -- a problem that has now found a solution.
